Thursday's victory marks the third last-eight showing of the season for the five-time grand-slam victor from Russian Federation, fighting to revive her ranking after serving a 15-month suspension for using an illegal doctor-prescribed medication.

The 30-year-old Russian rebounded from being broken in her second service game of the second set by breaking her foe on two occasions.

"We did a really good job of holding serve in the first set", the official website of the WTA (Women Tennis Association) quoted Sharapova as saying after the match.

Petra Kvitova, also seeded second, suffered a shock defeat in her first-round match at the Tianjin Open.

The five-time grand slam champion, soundly beaten by new world number one Simona Halep in the China Open last week, saw off Linette 7-5 6-3 to move into the last eight.

Italian qualifier Sara Errani continued her surge on her comeback from a two-month doping ban with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Third seed and defending champion Peng Shuai coasted into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over fellow Chinese countrywoman Wang Xiyu while American Christina McHale upset sixth-seed Greek Maria Sakkari, 6-0 6-4.

Peng Shuai, a victor of singles and doubles titles at this tournament past year, cruised to a 6-2 6-2 win over Wang Xiyu in an all-Chinese second-round encounter.
