Newcastle United have activated a clause to turn midfielder Mikel Merino's move from Borussia Dortmund into a long-term transfer after a superb start to the season.

Merino in turn signed a deal until June 2022, and he will now be able to exclusively focus on his performances without worrying about the future.

"I have been focused on football always, but it's good to know it [the transfer] is now official and people will know it". "I'm focused on my displays and improving myself, and I'm really happy to have signed this contract".

Merino then managed to kick-start his career at St James' Park, starting 6 Premier League games and coming on as a substitute once.

"He has made a great impression at the club, and he is a good professional".

Manager Benitez added: "I'm really pleased we have been able to bring Mikel to the club permanently".

"He has played very well since he joined us".

Ahead of their first campaign back in the Premier League, Newcastle revealed that they had agreed the season-long loan of the Spanish Under-21 worldwide, who had struggled for game time in the Bundesliga.
