Miami Heat guard Rodney McGruder will likely undergo surgery to fix a stress fracture in his leg and will miss at least the next three-to-six months as a result, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo!

McGruder is slated to undergo surgery next week.

McGruder went undrafted out of Kansas State in 2013.

This is a big blow for Miami after McGruder had a strong rookie campaign with the Heat last season and was expected to take on an even larger role to start this year. The Red Claws waived McGruder after 26 games, and his next stop was with the Heat's D-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

McGruder averaged 6.4 points in 78 games (65 starts) last season in his first National Basketball Association campaign.

Miami has McGruder under contract on an extremely team-friendly deal through the 2018-19 season.

In addition to the news regarding McGruder, the Heat have signed forward Tony Mitchell while waiving guard Larry Drew II, the franchise has formally announced.
