The Polish world number 18 was below her best, managing to land just 56 percent of first serves, but a double break in each set was enough for her to win in just 69 minutes on her Hong Kong debut.

"I felt like I played offensively and hit really deep, hard balls, but she had the luck today and could return those balls even harder and deeper".

The idea of stringing along rounds and tournaments to at least the quarterfinal was more hard than imagined but at least she had the chance to play some top players and the only high ranking one she defeated at mid season was Angelique Kerber at the first round of the US Open.

At the Tianjin Open, there were wins for Maria Sharapova and Sara Errani in her first WTA Tour match following a doping ban.

Then the same thing happened at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Though she's pulled off a big scalp before (she beat defending champion Angelique Kerber at the US Open), this is her first-ever Top 5 victory.

We did not actually have to wait long for the first breakthrough of the day, with the experienced Williams stepping up her gear to break serve in the fifth game after Osaka threw in an unfortunate double fault on break point.

"She played well", said Williams, who has qualified for the WTA Finals Singapore later this month.

But now, Osaka has conquered one of her idols (though she's admitted she always loved Serena a little more).

"Venus is someone I've respected and admired", said Osaka, who had not been born when Williams reached her first Grand Slam final at the 1997 US Open.

"I'm kind of honored, because I don't think I would have started playing if Venus and Serena weren't, like, there for me growing up", Osaka said at Wimbledon.

In the singles, Venus Williams also suffered a shock exit after she was comprehensively beaten 7-5, 6-2 by teenager Naomi Osaka. "I mean, it's kind of weird to hear that she, like, maybe she even talked about me". Williams had the first real opportunity to break in the third game when she jumped out to a 0-30 lead but failed to capitalize on her chances as Osaka narrowly prevailed to remain on serve.

At the end of the day it was a done deal and Osaka was the victor of her first successful match over another top-ranked player and over Venus Williams.
