A police officer was shot and killed by a suspect in New Orleans early Friday morning, officials have confirmed.

The fallen officer, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital where he passed away, Harrison told reporters outside the hospital.

Harrison said four officers made an observation that caused them to exit the police vehicle when a suspect opened fire, striking the officer several times.

The officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died.

As of 4 a.m., the officer had not been identified. He also was taken to UMC, where his condition was not revealed.

The suspect fled to a nearby building.

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison added. She said officers went around knocking on doors and ushered residents out of the building. The identity of the officer has not been released at the request of the family.

"It's scary", she said.

Police reported an "officer life in danger" around 12:30 Friday morning on the 6800 block of Cindy Place.

The police chief said grief counselors are on the scene.
