"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said.

For instance, Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee was also among those that were being considered for the position. She is his choice to replace John Kelly, who is now Trump's chief of staff. She is the premiere candidate for the homeland security post who had benefited in the department according to the statement.

She has a reputation as an expert on cybersecurity matters, and if confirmed, she would be the first former DHS employee to run the department.

Melania Trump proved she owns fall when she showed up to a ceremony at the White House Thursday in a gorgeous dress and coat combo.

Ms. Nielsen was General Kelly's number two at DHS and later the White House.

The trust Kelly has in Nielsen will be crucial because, if confirmed, she'll have plenty on her plate. That includes restricting access to the Oval Office and streamlining the flow of information to the president.

Former DHS Secretary Tom Ridge - the first person to ever hold the position, which President George W. Bush created in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks - praised Nielsen in a statement, calling her a "homeland security veteran" who is "extremely well versed" in the threats facing the U.S. That might have contributed to Trump thinking about her highly. Elaine Duke has been serving as acting DHS secretary since then. She was forced to clarify her claim last month that the federal response to Maria is "a good news story".

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), a ranking member of the House Homeland Security panel, said he was pleased Trump had selected a permanent agency head "after letting the critical national security position remain vacant as the nation faced multiple major hurricanes and a domestic terrorism attack".
