A federal grand jury returned an indictment October 12 charging five alleged members and associates of MS-13 with the murder of Christian Alexander Sosa Rivas, 21, on January 1 at a park in Dumfries.

The Justice Department said in the statement that the five believed Sosa Rivas was a member of a rival gang who was claiming to be an MS-13 member, and the defendants' goal was "gaining entrance to and maintaining and increasing position in MS-13, which is an enterprise engaged in racketeering activity".

The indictment further alleges that the defendants kidnapped and murdered Sosa Rivas for the goal of gaining entrance to and maintaining and increasing position in MS-13, which is an enterprise engaged in racketeering activity.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement Wednesday that the men were named in a superseding indictment returned last month by a federal grand jury.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime.

Prosecutors say all eight, ranging from 18 to 22 years old, are in custody.

They are now facing sentences of up to 20-years in prison.
