RCMP shoot and kill distraught man near Qualicum Beach

Police have set up a white tent on Highway 19 southwest of Qualicum Bay.

The BC RCMP said officers with the Oceanside RCMP were called to help paramedics with a man who had stabbed himself inside his vehicle on the Island Highway near Van Isle Road around 6 a.m. on Thursday.

911 calls reported a man running down the highway and someone trying to restrain him. Emergency Health Services advised that they would await the arrival of police and remain in the area.

The Independent Investigations Office has been asked to determine whether the officers' actions had anything to do with the man's death.

EHS immediately attended the scene in order to provide medical assistance.

Paramedics attended, but the 35-year-old man died of his injuries.

When they arrived, a struggle ensued and at least one shot was sacked by police, according to the the release.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police at this time. IIO BC was notified per protocols. They added more details will follow.
