The company estimated operating profits of 14.5 trillion won (US$12.8 billion) in the July-September period, an all-time record for quarterly profit and almost triple the 5.2 trillion won earned a year earlier.

Revenue likely rose 29.7 percent from a year earlier to 62 trillion won, Samsung said in a regulatory filing. Pre-orders for the Note 8 hit the highest-ever for the Note series, Samsung previously said.

Samsung is way ahead of rivals in technology updates in its memory business; last month it began producing 128GB eUFS for vehicle systems. Specifically, high-capacity NANDs have enjoyed huge demand from flagship phones, servers, and new services in AI and IoT. Some analysts estimate a margin rate of near 50 percent, which would be unprecedented in its history. Growing sales of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) smartphone screens for new Apple smartphones also have supported forecasts of a new earnings record in the fourth quarter.

The precise contributions of each business will be announced at a later date.
