Although there were reports of the release getting delayed due to the ongoing battle over double taxation in Tamil Nadu between the Tamil Film Producer's council and government, the makers are however making all essential arrangements to ensure that the film releases to shatter all box office records. But, the makers have recently made it clear that they are planning a grand release as it will be releasing in 3292 screens worldwide. Blockbusters Baahubali 2 and Mahesh Babu's Spyder were earlier were the biggest Tamil releases.

The veracity of this rumor however will come to light only after the release of the film in October 18.

Vijay is collaborating with the director for the second time. In Malaysia, a Tamil dominant market, it's slated to open in 800 screens.

In his affidavit, the petitioner G. Devarajan claimed that select theatres in the State were in the habit of making a huge amount of money during the first five days of big releases involving celebrated actors. In the film, Vijay plays triple role and he is paired with Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The posters and trailers of the film received positive response from the audience. The film has been dubbed in Telugu as Adhirindi, and it will have a simultaneous release with its Tamil version.

The music of Mersal has been composed by AR Rahman. It is estimated that close to 200 screens were upgraded to 4K projectors before the release date of the movie.
