Linebacker Navorro Bowman's time with the 49ers could be coming to an end.

Bowman signed a four-year contract extension with team options through 2022, but the 49ers are apparently willing to send that contract elsewhere.

Bowman thrice made the Pro Bowl in a 49ers' uniform, and was an All-Pro four times.

The key is him staying healthy.

After missing the entire 2014 season due to injury, Bowman returned to action in 2015 and led the National Football League with 154 total tackles, according to gamebook statistics. "Our defense has been averaging about 80 plays a game".

First-round rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is set to return to limited action against Washington Sunday after being sidelined with a high ankle sprain since the team's Week 1 matchup against the Panthers.

The Bears have dealt with injuries all season at the inside linebacker position.

The Colts have had some struggles in the middle of their defense, especially when it comes to coverage but even if he isn't used in that role, Bowman would provide a veteran presence to an extremely young defense. The 49ers have granted that request. Rapoport cites Bowman's injury history and large base salary as barriers to the trade.

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, general manager Reggie McKenzie would be wise to do all he can bring Bowman on board before this season gets any further out of hand. Teams tried, but ultimately, San Francisco ended up releasing the talented linebacker.

Bowman will now be free to sign with any team he so chooses. He will also be able to control his own future, rather than be locked into a rebuilding team until he retires. The 49ers are making a hard choice that could certainly come back to bite them.
