Residents who live in the area are being asked to check in with Emergency Social Services at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre at 562 3 Ave.

The evacuation will continue in the evacuation area until the City has confirmed the leak is contained. Red Apple, 7-Eleven, and Trinity Lodge are included in the evacuation.

In a statement, the City of Fernie says all homes and businesses in the downtown area between Ninth and 13th streets on Highway 3 and Sixth Avenue have been evacuated.

Highway 3 remains open to traffic.

Mayor Mary Giuliano said the incident occurred Tuesday, sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT and that crews are on the scene assessing the situation. "We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience".

The Fernie Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and Elk Valley RCMP are still on scene at the Fernie Memorial Arena, following afternoon reports of the leak. As soon as they become available, this story will be updated.
