They now trail the series 3-1 and must win their next three games in order to avoid elimination and return to the World Series. But in a critical Game 4, Arrieta gave the Cubs exactly what they needed - pitching deep into the game and limiting the Dodgers potent offense.

The Cubs got on the board first, but in Game 4 they found support through Jake Arrieta and the bullpen to maintain their lead for the first time in the series. Culberson started against left-handed pitchers during the first two games against the Cubs, and Taylor started against right-handed pitchers in the next two games.

The plate umpire in Game 4 of the NLCS said he was "dead wrong" in overturning a call that saw Cubs manager Joe Maddon ejected for the second time in the series.

To add to the tension, Dodger third baseman Justin Turner, who hit a walkoff home run in Game 1, made it a one-run game in the eighth inning, making it a 3-2 game.

On Wednesday, he was hot with home-plate umpire Jim Wolf after a phantom foul-tip call allowed the Dodgers' Curtis Granderson to extend his at-bat in the eighth with a man on and the Dodgers having cut the lead to 3-2 off closer Wade Davis. That would be the 2004 Boston Red Sox. So, with that being said, I think it's a good idea for Maddon to change up the lineup for tonight's game. He's a hitter that knows how to take his walks, but also knows how to be aggressive. They win the subsequent game less than half the time (49.4 percent), so the Cubs could well force a Game 6 if the macro statistics stand the test of the micro. "The process was bad", Maddon said. That's the question, Mr. Shakespeare.

Could we be witnessing the start of a gathering storm? It's not complicated. We just have not swung the bats well this postseason. "We'll be back here for Game 7 and through all the World Series". "We need to hit". Wood, who won 16 games and had an ERA of 2.72 across 152 1/3 innings, did not pitch in the division series due to the Dodgers' sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The season-saving Game 4 victory proved to be a step in the right direction, both for the Cubs and Baez, who admitted Wednesday night that worrying about his family back in his native Puerto Rico played into his on-field frustrations.

Jake Arrieta worked 6.2 innings and only allowed three hits and one run with an impressive nine punchouts. Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal asked for a fastball away to Contreras, which it wasn't, and on contact Wood recoiled at his mistake.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his increased level of confidence that shortstop Corey Seager will be ready for the next round of the playoffs, should the Dodgers advance, after Seager played catch Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. It struck the scoreboard that hangs over the left-field bleachers, turned out, which is a very long way from home plate.

And just a few minutes later, Javy Baez crushed this homer down the left field line.

The Cubs had scored first in each of the series' first three games, and so in all four of them.

Baez homered again in the fifth inning, this on a curveball that arrived beneath the zone.
