The six-month long investigation engaged more than 1000 officers and yielded 150,000 files containing adult content.

Among those arrested were retired policemen, civil servants and people in charge of football youth clubs, the BBC reported.

Brazilian police on Friday arrested more than 100 people in raids targeting pedophile networks across the country. Brazil's Justice Minister Torquato Jardim said it was carried out with the help of the United States embassy, and it's understood that European immigration officials were also associated with the operation. They employed sophisticated techniques to evade police detection.

"They store their illegal, criminal photos in a computer of someone in another part of the country or even overseas", he said.

"And often the people storing the content are unaware", he added.

Images of the children were shared by the suspects via computers and smartphones.

"Suspects were caught red-handed with pornographic material of a paedophile nature seized from their computers or mobile phones", a spokesman for the Justice Ministry told Agence France-Presse. Jardim said that police identified individuals as well as criminal groups acting within the network. More arrests could take place in the near future as the investigation expands, the justice ministry said.
