Grid penalty for apologetic Magnussen

"The driver of vehicle 20 admitted he had impeded auto 11 and the team admitted it had inadvertently incorrectly advised the driver that Perez was on an out-lap", the stewards noted. Both Magnussen and Haas apologised to Perez for the error.

"He was in a fast lap but I was told that he was on an out lap so I didn't let him through", Magnussen said. "I can understand if he's pretty angry about that. I definitely impeded his lap and that gets you a penalty, so I'm expecting a penalty". Perez then swore at Magnussen over the radio and said he is "always the same" and "so unprofessional".

"My qualifying was compromised massively by Magnussen when he blocked me in Q1". So that hurt me a lot. "He didn't do it on goal, but they are quite often, him or Haas, getting it wrong".

Haas' Romain Grosjean had brilliant reactions to avoid the Williams of Lance Stroll who veered off the racing line.

Grosjean moved to stay wide through the Turn 19 runoff area to avoid Stroll's auto in his path, but then Stroll darted out into Grosjean's path. Grosjean was forced to off-road his Haas vehicle in order to avoid a collision.

Grosjean had to take avoiding action at high speed between the final corners on a flying lap in Q1 as Stroll attempted to move out of his way to the right, at the same time the Haas driver was already taking to that side to try to pass.

While the stewards acknowledged Stroll did what he could, they deemed it "potentially a very risky situation" and said Williams should have done more to warn the Canadian of Grosjean's approach. Watch the US GP weekend live on Sky Sports F1 - the race begins at 8pm on Sunday.
