The DGA released the news after its quarterly National Board of Directors meeting in New York City on Saturday.

Despite the fact that the DGA never commented on internal matters of the Union, at this time, the Guild members decided to make an exception in Weinstein because of the scandal.

The DGA is the third group to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Weinstein.

The DGA has a long-standing practice of not commenting on internal union matters, but has decided to make an exception in this case to acknowledge the filing of charges.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal described a Weinstein Co executive conference gone bad: "In about 2011, after an argument over how to allocate the studio's resources between their respective movies, Harvey Weinstein punched his brother in the face in front of about a dozen other Weinstein Co executives, knocking him to the ground, said two people who were present".

On Thursday, Nyong'o detailed her account of her 2011 encounter with Weinstein at his CT home in the New York Times.

"Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein", read one such statement, after model Cara Delevingne joined the list of accusers. "I mean, if you could take a week where it was revealed that Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted every single female in show business and still be the worst fat, gross creep, that's pretty good". There must be no tolerance for such deplorable abuses of power. We must recognize sexual harassment is endemic in our society, and painfully, in our industry. Each individual has the right to a safe work environment. The unfortunate truth is that there are those who abuse the power that they hold.

The allegations and public discussion of Harvey Weinstein's behaviour have prompted scores of people outside Hollywood circles to share their own experiences with sexual harassment and assault on social media using the viral hashtag #MeToo. This shameful code of complicity must be broken.

They added: "We are committed to eradicating the scourge of sexual harassment on our industry". The Producers Guild of America moved this week to start the process of expelling Weinstein as a PGA member.
