Carter also came to Trump's defense several other times during the interview, arguing that his aggressive style is not setting back US relations with the world.

The former president said he offered his help to H. R. McMaster, Trump's national security adviser, but has not been called upon.

"This is about getting President Xi's attention.so that China will really clamp down on the umbilical cord through which 90 percent of the trade that goes to and from North Korea transits", Petraeus said in an interview on ABC News.

The speech says the carefully arranged worldwide nuclear deal with Iran should act as a model for dealings with North Korea - an emphasis on seeking diplomatic solutions while keeping open the option of military action. In fact, Yun Sun, a senior associate with the East Asia Program at the Stimson Center, a think tank focuses on worldwide peace and security, tells Bustle that Carter's attempts at brokering a peace deal could actually backfire.

Tensions have been rising between the United States and North Korea, with each side spouting bellicose rhetoric and threatening military actions. "'We are able to subdue the Americans and make them send a former president to our capitol'".

Officials said the USA is expected to fly B-1B bombers over South Korea every two to three weeks to help deter the communist nation.

"I think the media have been harder on Trump than any other president certainly that I've known about", Carter told New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd.

The former president notes in the interview that he and former first lady Rosalynn Carter disagree on the matter.

"Our leader Kim Jong Un has explained our stance: we will coerce the Americans to peace and respond to fire with fire".

"If there is some kind of military engagement, we will be the best prepared we can be".

Some political pundits on the Sunday morning talk shows speculated whether Carter was positioning himself for a job in Trump's administration by complimenting the president in the press.
