"When an emergency strikes, Pennsylvania first responders are called upon to handle the situation and support the community", Governor Wolf said. "Our public safety personnel needs and deserves resources that will help keep them safe and allow them to deliver the best possible services for our communities, and that's why I'm proud to work with FirstNet and AT&T to bring this innovative technology to our state".

Mark Keel, chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, echoed this sentiment. "We have been working with FirstNet for some time and are pleased this is coming to fruition for the benefit of those we all serve".

"This is a big day for South Carolina", McMaster said, explaining that the system "will allow all first-responders in our state to communicate instantly without interruption 24 hours a day with 100 percent certainty in order to complete their mission".

McMaster's decision adds SC to a list of 30 states and territories that have signed on. McMaster's "opt-in" announcement was made this morning, just minutes after Pennsylvania released its "opt-in" announcement. Governors in 53 states and territories that received initial state plans on June 19-the exceptions being the Pacific territories of Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Island, which will have a separate timetable-are required to make their "opt-in/opt-out" decisions by December 28.

"The ability to share real-time images and video of the scene as well as the locations of first responders and locally relevant information improves communication and outcomes", said Major Diane M. Stackhouse, Pennsylvania State Police and the state's point-of-contact for FirstNet.

Created by Congress in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, FirstNet is an independent federal agency that partners with AT&T to build new radio access networks in states to avoid jammed communications in case of an emergency.
