A man was fatally shot by a Baton Rouge Police Department officer at an apartment complex in Baton Rouge Monday evening (Nov. 13), Louisiana State Police said. WAFB reported that a large crowd gathered at the scene, where the person who was shot was pronounced dead.

The Baton Rouge police officer was escorting an employee from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to the Palms apartment complex when a struggle ensued, culminating in the fatal shooting, spokesman Bryan Lee told reporters at a news conference.

"During the course of the investigation, the escorting officer was involved in a struggle with the suspect".

"In July 2016, a white Baton Rouge police officer shot and killed a 37-year-old black man, Alton Sterling., outside a convenience store where he was selling homemade CDs".

Broome, the city mayor, urged calm while investigators learned more about Monday night's shooting. "The protocol is to have the State Police do the investigation", Broome said, according to WBRZ-TV. Troopers would not say whether Toney had a gun, but authorities did confirm that the struggle lasted several minutes and that Toney was "tased" before being shot. The officer sustained minor injuries. They also worked to dispel a rumor that quickly spread on social media following the shooting.

Democratic state Rep. C. Denise Marcelle was among those officials who spoke out after Sterling's shooting.

"The emotions are extremely high", Marcelle said.

"We really are early on in this investigation, state police are here doing the job they always do", Moore said.

Broome also released a statement Monday night in response to the shooting.

State District Court Judge Richard Anderson overturned Wilbert Jones' conviction on October 31, saying the case against him was "weak, at best". "I ask that the community withhold judgment on this incident until the LSP concludes its work".
