This Tuesday, he admitted one charge of assault by beating.

Gary Goldsmith, 52, attacked Julie-Ann Goldsmith outside their home in Wimpole Street, central London, at around 1.20am on October 13, this year.

Gary, who is worth nearly $40 million, attended both Kate, 35, and sister Pippa's weddings.

Shepherd said he rushed to the woman's aid and called the police on her request.

The couple's taxi driver, Daniel Shepherd, told police that he saw Julie-Ann, 47, slap her husband.

Ms Shilton said Goldsmith appeared to be "panicked" and when the taxi driver challenged him over his actions, he became aggressive.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard that Goldsmith - who is the younger brother of Kate's mother Carole Middleton - left Julie-Ann Goldsmith unconscious outside of their London home.

Ahead of sentencing, which will take place on 21 November, chief magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said she was "excluding custody and looking at a community order". They both got out of the taxi and he (Mr Shepherd) describes Mrs Goldsmith slapping her husband to the face.

"He then describes how Mr Goldsmith punches her hard in the face using a left hook."Mrs Goldsmith has then fallen backwards. He says "She appears to be unconscious, she isn't moving".

"But I am really looking at how to protect this lady from this man", she said.

Goldsmith was brought up in a council estate in Hounslow, west London, and had initially worked as an IT operator before becoming an entrepreneur.

Julie-Ann is Goldsmith's fourth wife.

When that marriage broke down he married again six years later to Luan. Their mother worked in a shop and also did accounts, while their father was a painter and decorator.

His sister Carole left school she went on to work for British Airways when he was still a teenager.
