Jon Stewart says people like Louis CK are endemic in comedy

Jon Stewart made awkward jokes a year ago when pressed about rumors that his friend and fellow comedian Louis C.K.'s acted inappropriately toward women. Comedians Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov said C.K. did masturbate in front of them in his hotel room in Aspen, Colorado during the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.

As the interview came to a close, Lauer asked if Stewart had talked to C.K. since last week's New York Times story broke.

"You give your friends the benefit of the doubt", Stewart explained about not believing the rumors when he first heard them. "Some of them have died".

But, he added, "You always find yourself back to a moment of 'Did I miss something". Could I have done more?' And in this situation, I think we all could have. "You feel anger at what he did to people". He told Lauer he was "stunned" by the reported behavior of Louis C.K., and added, "Comedy on its best day is not a great environment for women".

The New York Times report about Louis C.K. caused a videotaped interaction between Stewart and a University of Chicago student from a year ago to resurface.

HBO has since removed C.K. from the Stewart-hosted "Night of Too Many Stars", which airs live on the network on November 18 at 8pm ET. "So the internet said Louis harassed women? You know who you're talking to, right?" he said to him, incredulously. Honestly, I'm not that connected to that world. "And I would say, 'Well, are you going to address it somehow?" Appearing on a podcast hosted by David Axelrod, the former chief campaign strategist for Barack Obama, Stewart was asked by an audience member if there was a chance C.K. might be The Daily Show's last guest with Stewart as host, with the audience member, Dan Ackerman, alluding to the allegations surrounding C.K.

Stewart addressed the clip in his Today interview.

Stewart still claims that podcast appearance was the first time he heard anything about C.K.'s mistreatment of women, which is why he acted surprised and then joked about it. Stewart went back over his response, saying "Louie's always been a gentleman to me, which again, speaks to the blindness that I think a man has, which is like 'Ey!"
