Kansas basketball: Devonte Graham will shine in Champions Classic

"It's hard to play that small (like KU did Friday) when you're playing against bigger guys", Self said. However, as we've seen and as I said, Kentucky usually doesn't get run off the court in these games because everyone, even the more experienced teams, are a work in progress this early in the year. Kevin Knox and PJ Washington are second and third on the team.

Truth be told, Calipari knew exactly what he was doing when Vermont was added to the 2017-18 schedule. Apart from the Tigers being an average team and still getting slaughtered by the Jayhawks, the scariest part of the win is that it nearly felt as if Kansas was not even playing at full potential.

However, this is a young team, and John Calipari will have time to get them into top form before the NCAA Tournament. I didn't realize how good (Vermont) was until I watched the tape. Defensively they have very good potential but there have been some problems early.

The lessons learned were invaluable for the youngest team in America.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the starting point guard in the season opener, but Quade Green started in place of Gilgeous-Alexander and finished with four points. "We just had to buckle down and play defense (at the end)". "That was big", Calipari said. "I'm fighting to get my mindset in that I've got to stay in the moment of all this and I've got to be as positive for these guys as I can, and then I've got to try to build this toward the end of the year". At 6:25, it was five points. The Green and Gold hung around and whittled the deficit to a one-possession game after Urquhart hit a three-pointer from the left wing at the four-minute mark. The Wildcats scored 73 points in both games. Kentucky had one missed shot on one turnover, Vermont had three missed 3-pointers and two missed free throws. Jarred Vanderbilt isn't playing yet but Calipari calls him the most positionless player on the team. "First time this year".

Vermont fell to 0-15 against Southeastern Conference teams.

"Our aspirations are to win these games", Becker said. "It's just a possession or two, especially against a team like that". Lagerald Vick, who was expected to play a somewhat complimentary role, went for 23 points, and I honestly believe that Kansas might be underrated even as the No. 4 team in college basketball.

To date, Kansas is 0-2 vs. Kentucky in this event, 0-2 vs. Michigan State, and 2-0 vs. Duke.

"Kentucky is a team that's going to have to be reckoned with for a national championship", Becker said. That same list had Hamidou Diallo at No. 37, the top-ranked player on the team. The 29 wins were a school record. Those, including me, who believed the Wildcats were a bit underrated heading into the season should be a bit concerned because these struggles are real.
