Sporting Kansas City's USL side Swope Park Rangers also suffered postseason heartache on Monday, falling in the USL Cup final for the second year in a row after a 1-0 loss to Louisville City FC.

After being deadlocked for 88 minutes, LouCity took the lead when Cameron Lancaster headed a goal home from the center of the penalty box on an assist from Devon Williams.

It was a second USL Cup final defeat in a row for Rangers, following their 5-1 loss to New York Red Bulls II previous year.

The game was played in front of 14,456 fans, a record crowd at Louisville Slugger Field.

The new champions, only in their third season of existence, received approval from the city of Louisville a little over a week ago to construct a soccer stadium which is set to open in 2020.

The South African's club had enjoyed a solid run into this season's cup final, in what is a somewhat complex third-tier system in the U.S.: having come fourth in the regular league stages of Western Conference, Rangers qualified for the championship stages, beating Didier Drogba's Phoenix Rising in the quarter-finals, Sacramento Republic in the semi-finals and OKC Energy in the final to win their second Western Conference title in succession.
