That's according to the Wall Street Journal, which reports that Nintendo is in talks with Illumination Entertainment, a subsidiary of Universal Studios responsible for movies like Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, and Minions.

In a newly discovered glitch, Super Mario Odyssey players using the multiplayer mode can actually kill Mario instead of helping him. Polygon has reached out to both Nintendo and Illumination for comment. All the information available to the WSJ comes from sources close to the project. The newspaper said the deal has had its complications, centered around making the Japanese game company "feel confident it will be involved enough in the creative process". Reports also suggest Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is part of the talks, and may be a producer on the movie. Animated films, especially ones as important as this, tend to take a long time to make, so don't even bother to start holding your breath yet.

Once upon a time, Nintendo chose to roll the dice on a big-budget Hollywood adaptation of Super Mario Bros.

The animated Super Mario Bros. film is now in "early development", which doesn't mean much.
