Panthers fear Curtis Samuel could miss significant time

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers fear Samuel suffered a high ankle sprain or perhaps worse, which could threaten his ability to play much of a role the rest of the regular season. Though veteran tight end Greg Olsen is slated to make a return soon after suffering a foot injury all the way back in Week 2, the Panthers cut ties with their No. 1 wide receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, when they shipped him to the Buffalo Bills a few weeks ago.

Samuel injured his ankle in the second quarter of last night's win over the Miami Dolphins.

The Panthers announced the second-round pick will undergo season-ending ankle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

In 9 games and on 26 targets, Samuel produced 15 catches for 115 yards.

"There were a lot of good things", offensive coordinator Mike Shula said Tuesday. The Panthers (7-3) must now rely on Funchess, Kaelin Clay, Russell Shephard and Brenton Bersin.

This latest news is extremely disappointing but hardly comes as a shock.

"It's kind of a collective effort", Shula said. We're going to try hard to find ways to put guys in place for what they do best and then have them go do it.

"It's probably going to be by committee", Shula added.

"One of the best things that happened after Curtis [went out] was we didn't feel we missed a beat, " Shula said. Guys came in and did their job, knew their assignments.
