What exactly motivated Mendes, the Oscar-winning director behind films like American Beauty, to depart from the movie is now unknown, which is only made more complicated when considering the fact that Mendes left Disney's live-action James and the Giant Peach to join Pinocchio earlier this year.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker is known for directing the last two James Bond films, but apparently Spectre was his last - or was it?

The film, based on the famous 1940 cartoon, is in works at the Disney with writer Chris Weitz penning the script. Meanwhile, Bill Condon recently steered Beauty and the Beast to a worldwide gross of $1.2 billion. Mendes is not linked with the 25th official James Bond movie and his exit from the Disney project nothing to do with 007, according to sources, but you have to admit, it would be pretty cool for him to return to round out the trilogy.

Mendes' exit represents a setback for Pinocchio, but Disney shouldn't have a hard time finding a replacement, as the studio's live-action adaptations of its animated classics have lured big names such as Jon Favreau, Tim Burton and Guy Ritchie.
