Cilic, who won the 2014 US Open, broke the American twice to win the first set, but found himself adrift in the second as Sock levelled the round-robin match with two breaks of his own.

Jack Sock kept his dreams of a fairytale finish to his season alive on Tuesday, beating Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic 5-7 6-2 7-6 (4) at the ATP Finals.

American eighth seed Jack Sock boosted his chances of reaching the last four at the ATP Finals with victory over Croatian fifth seed Marin Cilic.

"That was a tough one for sure", Sock told Sky Sports' Annabel Croft during his on-court interview.

Serve dominated the rest of the set but Cilic edged 4-2 up in the tie-break when the ball struck the net chord and Sock failed to dig it over.

"It's been an interesting morning so far". It is what it is, you have to deal with it. Marin's an incredible player, he's had an unbelievable season but I was able to get through. It's an unbelievable atmosphere, you make me feel like home. "I'm excited to excited to keep winning and keep my hopes alive this week".

Federer and German third seed Alexander Zverev meet in Tuesday's second match in the Boris Becker Group at 20:00 GMT.

Again Sock battled back, however.

The top two players from each group qualify for the semi-finals.

The Spaniard quit the tournament on Monday after losing his opening match in the Pete Sampras group to David Goffin.

Zverev is the only man to have won a match against Federer when ranked inside the top-10, while he's also the only star to topple the Swiss in a final, after downing him in Montreal.
