"As acting director of the agency since January, Homan has demonstrated that ICE - like all law enforcement departments - can prioritize the removal of illegal aliens who pose a unique danger to the American people, while continuing to carry out the agency's other duties".

President Donald Trump is nominating the acting director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to serve in the post permanently.

Homan has run the agency since Obama appointee Sarah Saldaña - the former USA attorney in Dallas - stepped down when Trump took office in January. Lawmakers must approve the nomination by a majority vote.

"You can't be a part of this country unless you have respect for the laws of this country and the people that protect you - the people that enforce the laws", Homan said at the time. While Congress has done little to address state and local obstruction of federal immigration enforcement, Homan has acted decisively and effectively.

The White House says Homan's nomination will be sent to the Republican-controlled Senate on Tuesday, reports the Associated Press.
