Amazon to launch 'Lord of the Rings' TV show

For days, several rumors have circulated around the internet, and last Monday, it was officially revealed: Amazon has acquired all global TV rights for "The Lord of the Rings" franchise, which will entail a multi-season TV series, as well as a spinoff series.

The production budget will likely add another $100-$150 million a season - but Amazon is seen as having deep pockets, as chairman Jeff Bezos has challenged his creative teams to come up with a prestigious fantasy series to rival Game Of Thrones.

The new series will explore story lines preceding "The Fellowship of the Ring", the first installment in the epic trilogy by Tolkien. "The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen", said Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios.

"The Lord of the Rings" canon was named Amazon customers' favorite book of the millennium in 1999. Its theatrical adaptations, from New Line Cinema and Director Peter Jackson, earned a combined gross of almost $6 billion worldwide. He followed up with a prequel trilogy based on Tolkien's The Hobbit, which made nearly the same at the box office.

"Amazon is committed to producing super high quality, recognized, branded entertainment", said Wedbush Securities industry analyst Michael Pachter.

Apparently, the "Lord of the Rings" original series will be exclusively produced by Amazon Studios, in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros.
