A man police are calling a "highly unsafe psychopath" has escaped the Hawaii State Hospital and left the island of Oahu on a charter plane.

Maui police say he flew to Maui shortly afterward. He was only on Maui for about an hour and a half before he purchased a ticket to board a flight bound for San Jose, California, possibly using another name, sources tell Maui Now.

"He is a very risky individual", said Wayne Tashima, a Honolulu prosecutor who argued in 2015 against Saito receiving passes to leave the hospital grounds without an escort. That flight landed about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tashima warned people not to approach Saito, saying there's a concern he could commit the same "very heinous and violent offense" again. Authorities asked anyone with information on Saito to call police. He reportedly killed a woman at the Ala Moana Center in 1979, but was acquitted by reason of insanity.

In 1981, his attorney did not contest Saito's committal, saying he was risky and "intends to do it again". But Jeff Albert, a deputy city prosecutor, objected, saying Saito "fills all the criteria of a classic serial killer".

A court in 1993 denied Saito's request for conditional release, saying Saito still suffered from sexual sadism and necrophilia just as when he was committed to the hospital 12 years earlier, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.

The Hawaii Department of Health operates the hospital, which houses over 300 patients in Kaneohe.
