It may sound like a "Saturday Night Live" skit, but the "Come Meet a Black Person" event - set for Thursday in Lawrenceville, near Atlanta - is a real attempt to bridge the racial divide.

The Public Religion Research Institute found that almost 75% of white people in America don't have any nonwhite friends.

'It's a great opportunity to start relationships, ' Cheryle Moses, the founder of black media organization Urban MediaMakers, told CNN.

According to those figures, 75 per cent of whites in the U.S. have no nonwhite friends, and even for those that have, their friends circles are 91 per cent white. Organized in conjunction with the Urban Mediamakers and other groups, the event urges white people to put aside "pre-conceived notions" about the black community and come out to make friends with black people, the event page reads. "But still, seeing a statistic about it just opened our eyes".

Similarly, 65 per cent of black people don't have any white friends and the average black American's friends are 85 per cent black.

What Moses and Urban MediaMakers hope to accomplish is more than have the cliched "conversation on race", which everyone talks about having, but rarely have. "I know everything about white people, but a lot of white people don't know much about our culture or our community".

Moses said that most people have been supportive of her endeavor.

'And if you have a relationship with somebody, you are inclined to treat them like yourself. "If you don't have that relationship, then you'll only treat them based upon what you may have seen or read somewhere".

That will be aided by a "cultural" scavenger hunt, which is meant to help white attendees learn about the black community.

"We can tell when someone is uncomfortable", Moses said, so they will go around and break the ice and introduce people to each other.

Moses said that the response to the event has mostly been positive, and that if it is successful, further editions will take place in 2018.
