With Christmas now on the horizon, many area folks are continuing preparations to spread the season's love with Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.

They partner locally and world-wide with those willing to help fill shoe boxes with personal care items, clothing and accessories, toys and a "wow" item and ship them internationally to kids in need.

Sheila said the type of items in every box vary depending on the gender and age the volunteer chooses to donate to.

It is during this time that Samaritan's Purse will collect those carefully filled boxes from people at almost 5,000 drop-off sites across the United States.

Operation Christmas Child is asking you to pack shoe boxes just like this one that will go into a bigger box and be sent to children worldwide. They are donating colorfully wrapped shoe box gifts to be sent to children around the world - many of whom have never received a gift before and have very little to call their own.

Something as simple as a bar of soap may be the first gift they ever receive. "Our members bring in items, and we take them to Lafayette", which, she said, was often the main drop-off point in Acadiana. "She talked about Etch-a-Sketches", said Dana Kimmel, a volunteer with Operation Christmas Child.

Over the years, local churches have stepped up to the plate to make boxes and serve as drop-off locations for the global project.

The organization, based in Boone, N.C., on Monday launched Operation Christmas Child.

"I feel entitled and I feel like I deserve Christmas, and if they get a bar of soap, they're happy, and I don't want to feel that greet inside me anymore, so I want to share Christmas with them", Canton Academy student Sloan Powell said. "You can also go online to Operation Christmas Childand you can fill a box online and pay for it online", Kramer said. If they don't have school supplies they don't go to school.

HOW MUCH TO SPEND: The typical spending range for a box is $15-$20, Parker-Moore said.
