The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled winger Nikita Soshnikov from the Marlies, just ahead of the deadline that opened a door for him to return to the KHL.

The 24-year-old winger was second in team scoring with the Leafs AHL affiliate (5 goals and 7 assists in 14 games) and is a favorite of Leafs coach Mike Babcock because of his work ethic and tenacity, but the move was necessitated by a clause in his entry-level contract that allows him to return to the KHL if he is not on an National Hockey League roster by November 15.

Soshnikov is expected to join the Leafs in practice Wednesday (the team has Tuesday off).

Soshnikov has collected five goals, seven assists and 10 penalty minutes in 14 games with the Marlies this season.

Soshnikov signed with the Leafs as a free agent in 2014. Frederik Gauthier, who was recalled last week with Auston Matthews on the injury shelf, was returned to the Marlies.

In 2016-17, Gauthier split his season between the Leafs and Marlies.
