After the American Legion found no path of resolution to the problem, the financial burden of fix has fallen to the veterans themselves.

They usually happen on Flag Day on June 14, but oftentimes, posts get overloaded with flags.

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937.

"A proper disposal is to take it to your scouting facilities or your VFWs or your American Legion Posts and they will in turn put these through a burning pit to take care of them the correct way".

In his remarks, Post 150 commander Virgil Boyer said the blood and sweat of war taught lessons "of goal, sacrifice, tolerance, bravery and discipline", calling them the "foundation stones upon which a great nation is built".

The American Legion Post 209 disposed of close to 100 flags on Saturday.
