Driverless cars take to United Kingdom roads

The tests are aiming to enable driverless cars to replicate human behaviour and reactions when driving.

As well as self-driving the cars are connected by communications technology so they can "talk" to each other and to roadside systems such as traffic lights.

'By using inputs from multiple sensors, and finding intelligent ways to process this data, we are gaining accurate technical insight to pioneer the automotive application of these technologies'.

The aim of the project is to hold a series of open road trials and demonstrations of self-driving cars during 2018, and then establish the United Kingdom as a global hub for this type of technology.

Project director Tim Armitage hailed it as a major landmark in the race to develop and introduce autonomous cars onto the UK's roads.

Project partners Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) have begun to collaboratively trial a number of connected vehicle features on the streets of central Coventry.

Britain's biggest automaker, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has tested its first driverless auto on public roads, it said on Friday, as carmakers race against each other and tech firms to tap into new technologies.

It has already proven its research technology can work on a closed track and the real-world testing is the next step in turning the research into reality.

The trials are examining the effectiveness of connecting cars to each other, traffic lights and other road furniture, as well as a network to provide advanced information such as emergency vehicle warnings.

The connected vehicle trials are exploring the benefits of having cars that can communicate with each other and their surroundings.

There were no collisions or unexpected incidents but throughout the tests an experienced driver was in the vehicles ready to take control if required.

Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) - sends traffic light information to the connected auto which is able to calculate the optimal speed for approaching the lights, potentially minimising the number of red light stops, improving traffic flow and reducing emission levels from idling vehicles.
