The NHL announced Saturday that the Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks will take part in the 2019 Bridgestone Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium on January 1, 2019. The Blackhawks have lost all three Winter Classic games they have played in, including a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues in the most recent installment on January 2.

The Chicago Blackhawks are returning to the NHL Winter Classic. "Both teams seem very excited for the opportunity to take the game outdoors once again".

This marks the fourth Winter Classic for the Blackhawks and the third for the Bruins. "We appreciate the invitation to the game and look forward to what will be a great day for both franchises and the National Hockey League".

This will be the fourth appearance for the Blackhawks in the Winter Classic.

In the case of the Blackhawks, they remind us that their players have had a chance to soak in the Notre Dame Stadium atmosphere before. Current Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman, who led Chicago to Stanley Cup Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015, graduated from the University in 1995. Current Bruins rookie forward Anders Bjork played three seasons with the Irish, culminating in last season's run to the 2017 Frozen Four.

The Original Six™ clubs have had 586 regular-season meetings, with Boston holding a 48-point edge over Chicago since the 1926-1927 season (Chicago 242-263-81-565, Boston 265-238-83-613).

It will be the sixth outdoor game for the Blackhawks after hosting Pittsburgh at the 2014 Stadium Series at Soldier Field and playing at TCF Bank Stadium in Minnesota in 2016.
