Despite his health concerns, the 48-year-old oversaw the LaLiga side's remarkable comeback against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday (AEDT).

Sevilla players sent coach Eduardo Berizzo an emotional open letter on Wednesday after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Sevilla was 3-0 down at the break, but a double from Wissam Ben Yedder and an injury-time goal from Guido Pizarro secured an enthralling point, with reports suggesting Berizzo told his players of his diagnosis at half-time.

The football world has sent messages of support on social media, with Sevilla captain Nico Pareja posting an open letter from the whole squad to the coach and fans on Twitter.

The club said the players were informed on Sunday that Eduardo Berizzo has prostate cancer.

"We pass on to him something that has been the mark of this club for a long time - "It is said we never surrender" - we'll all be there to make sure of that", the statement said. "You are not alone in this battle!"

Despite the harrowing situation, Berizzo was on the training ground this morning - shortly after Sevilla made the official announcement about his condition.

"Future examinations will decide what steps to follow regarding the treatment".

"Sevilla FC wants to show their full support to the coach right now and wishes him a speedy recovery".

Berizzo took over at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in the summer after spending three seasons at Celta Vigo, who he also played for between 2001 and 2005.
