"Our decision today is further reinforced by the continuous uncertainty being forced upon the NASL by the United States Soccer Federation", Tom Fath said in the statement.

"We sincerely hope the road to long-term stability can be found for the NASL as the NASL pursues the lawsuit against the USSF in the USA courts".

The Fath brothers joined the NASL at the league's founding meeting in November of 2009, and FC Edmonton started exhibition play in 2010. The team, which played its first official league match in April 2011, has played more than 200 league games.

We appreciate the support of the soccer community as we continue our plans for the 2018 season, and we remain confident ahead of our appeal hearing on December 15.

The two owners thanked players, coaches, fans, sponsors and administration for their work with the team.

The latest moves were not unexpected: In its presentation to U.S. Soccer's board of directors on September 1, the NASL did not include the two clubs on its list of eight teams that planned on operating in the NASL in 2018.

Interim Commissioner Rishi Sehgal released a statement on Friday following the announcements made by FC Edmonton and the San Francisco Deltas. The league had been seeking an injunction to regain its Division 2 designation.

During this time of change, two of our clubs, FC Edmonton and the San Francisco Deltas, will be departing the league.

On FC Edmonton's Facebook page, fans expressed hope that the team would be back to play with the Canadian Premier League, a new coast-to-coast professional soccer league that could begin play as early as 2018. "Let's hope we join the CPL".
