"19 persons are so far confirmed killed and 53 others injured", CJTF said.

The jihadists attacked the troops at about 17:45 (1645 GMT) on Thursday in Gajibo village near Dikwa, some 90km east of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

Isuku disclosed in a statement that one of the bombers detonated IED strapped on her body within Biu Main market, while the other one detonated outside the market square.

According to local officials cited by Reuters, suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers have killed at least 12 at a market in northeastern Nigeria.

Mr. Isuku said 53 persons sustained injuries while the two female suicide bombers were also killed.

Two female suicide bombers entered a marketplace in Biu, the third largest city in Borno State at 11.40 a.m. local time (1240GMT), police added.

"The Corpses & the injured persons have been evacuated to General Hospital Biu".

Isuku said police patrol and EOD teams were deployed to sanitise the scene of the attack, noting that normalcy has been restored in the area.

Saturday's attack bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram, which uses suicide bombers, often women and girls, to attack crowded public spaces.

Nwachukwu said that the troops killed the three insurgents when a group of terrorists attempted to attack Gajibo community on Thursday.

The Deputy Director said that the troops fought gallantly to defend the town and push back the attackers.
