Ozil has been in fine form for Arsenal of late having endured a hard start to the season.

Much of the attention at Emirates Stadium this season has focused on the contract rebels, as they continue to run down their respective deals.

The Germany worldwide, who has entered the final year of his contract at the Emirates is not expected to sign a new deal with the club.

Emirates insiders have suggested a stunning breakthrough in negotiations is "very, very close".

Ozil, who is now on a weekly wage of £140,000, is likely to demand a significant wage hike alongside a huge signing-on fee in order to prolong his Gunners stay beyond the summer.

United want to convince the Gunners to sell in January to avoid watching him go for free next summer.

Manchester City were summer suitors for Sanchez while Ozil, who has been among Arsenal's best players in recent weeks, has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

While Manchester United are thought to be keen to sign the former Real Madrid man, Arsenal would prefer to sell him overseas rather than a Premier League rival.

Ernesto Valverde's men are considering a €20m swoop for the World Cup victor in the January transfer window, though Arsenal boss Wenger recently insisted that the German will stay in north London until the end of the season, alongside fellow wantaway Alexis Sanchez.

But with Arsene Wenger unwilling to let go of the maestro on a free, he may have to sell him to his old nemesis Mourinho in January if a deal is not struck.

Although holding on to Ozil may be a big coup for Arsenal, it might not be the best signing for Man Utd.

Ozil is likely to feature against Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.
