AT&T/DOJ court hearing likely focusing on trial start

The trial to decide whether AT&T can buy Time Warner will start March 19, a federal district judge said on Thursday.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson had called the companies' requested court date of February 20 a "reasonable ask". Meanwhile, the two companies have set an (extended) merger termination date of April 22.

The U.S. Justice Department last month sued to block AT&T's planned acquisition of Time Warner, saying the combination could raise prices for rivals and pay-TV subscribers while hampering the development of online video.

The defendants, including AT&T subsidiary DirecTV, respond that no antitrust precedent supports the stopping of a vertical merger between a supplier and a distributor.

AT&T's attorneys also have stressed that it's the government's burden to prove the deal would harm competition.
