The presidential aide on social media, Bashir Ahmad, tweeted as President Muhammadu Buhari started a two day official visit to Kano, Nigeria's second most populated state.

The President has not visited Kano since his election in 2015.

This he says is part of the Federal Government's efforts to decongest prisons.

Buhari pledged that prison reforms and decongestion would continue to receive prompt attention from his administration. "We will invest more in education and vocational training".

The president also gave the inmates an undisclosed amount of money to transport themselves to their respective homes.

Some of the beneficiaries of the amnesty were males and females.

Buhari, in pardoning the inmates charged them to remain law abiding and stay away from committing crimes that might likely lead them back to prison.

He was received at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, members of the State Executive Council, Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, traditional rulers as well as politicians, among others.

Buhari is expected to commission some projects in the state during the visit.
