The extension, however, will only be given to those who don't have Aadhaar card as yet and for others the dateline will remain same (February 6, 2018) as it was decided by the apex court earlier, said attorney General KK Venugopal.

For most services like savings schemes, bank accounts, PAN, insurance policies and mutual funds, the deadline was December 31.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for those opposing the Aadhaar scheme, told the bench that the Centre should give an undertaking that no coercive steps would be taken against those who fail to link their Aadhaar with various services.

The petitioners have moved the top court seeking a stay on the government making Aadhaar linkage mandatory for bank accounts, mobile numbers, saying it infringes upon an individual's right to privacy. A bench headed by CJI Deepak Misra had said in October that a constitution bench would be set up for Aadhaar-related grievances. The official also added that once the new deadline will be crossed then the government might cancel all PANs that have not been linked. "So, all the Benami transactions will go", the official said.

The petitioners Arvind Datar and KV Vishwananathan also pointed out that the bank linking and phone linking were entirely illegal and sans authority, responding to which the Court said, "The Constitution Bench is due to hear the main Aadhaar case in November end would consider these issues too".
