Actor Vishal whose nomination was rejected alleged that false accusations were being levelled against him by the returning officer. "God save my beloved country from this anarchy!"

Vishal had announced on December 2 that he would be contesting in the upcoming bypoll from RK Nagar.

Out of the total 145 nomination papers received, as many as 73, including those of Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar and actor Vishal Krishna's, had been rejected.

On Wednesday, he met Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Rajesh Lakhoni and submitted a petition to review his nomination papers filed for the by-election. My nomination was accepted & later rejected. "Totally unfair. I bring this to your notice & I hope justice prevails", tweeted Vishal to the Twitter handles of the PM and Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He also tweeted: "5th Dec 2016, Amma died, 5th Dec, 2017, Democracy died..." The seat was left vacant by the death of J Jayalalithaa as Tamil Nadu chief minister in December a year ago.

Vishal said he was consulting legal experts.

Finding the two proposers and getting them to convince the Returning Officer that they had lied under pressure from a rival party was seen as Vishal's only chance to get back into the race for RK Nagar seat. On Monday, December 4, the actor submitted his nomination papers and alleges that they were accepted in his presence before being rejected. Till the deadline of withdrawal of nomination on Thursday, 13 affidavits were withdrawn.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has said a total of 59 candidates were finally left in the fray for the by-election.

The major contest will be between the ruling AIADMK (E. Madhusudhanan), DMK (N. Marudhu Ganesh) and the sidelined AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran, now contesting as an Independent candidate.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded K. Nagarajan as its candidate.

The seat has fallen vacant due to the death of sitting member and then chief minister Jayalalithaa on December 5 past year.
