When she rejected his advances, Morse said he brought up the then-developing investigation into the disappearance of former federal intern Chandra Levy.

Courtney Morse told The Washington Post that Conyers told her one night he was interested in a sexual relationship and held her hand in her lap after driving her home.

Levy disappeared in 2001. A police investigation at the time found that Levy had been having an affair with then-Rep.

"[Conyers] said he had insider information on the case. I don't know if he meant it to be threatening, but I took it that way", she told the Post. "I got out of the auto and ran".

Morse said nothing inappropriate happened during the first months of her internship and that she accepted Conyers' offer for a paid summer internship. At the end of one work day, Morse said he offered to drive her to a residence where she was staying about 30 minutes from Capitol Hill. Morse quit her internship shortly after the incident and returned to Ohio.

Years later, a jury convicted Ingmar Guandique for the murder, but prosecutors dropped charges against him on appeal in 2016, and the USA said it deported him earlier this year. Condit lost reelection in 2002 amid speculation about his role, but his lawyer later described the Guandique verdict as vindication for his client. That might have been the act of a exhausted old man who simply didn't feel up to defending his reputation in an ethics inquiry, or it might have been prompted by the realization of how many women could start coming forward with stories like the one Morse tells here.

The news website BuzzFeed on November 20 reported the first allegation: Conyers' office paid a woman more than $27,000 under a confidentiality agreement to settle a complaint in 2015 that she was sacked from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances.

Conyers, the longest-serving member of the House, announced his retirement on Tuesday, amid a cascade of allegations that he sexually assaulted women who worked for his office.

The committee will reportedly continue with the investigation, despite Conyers' resignation. Grubbs said on one occasion, as the two sat in the front row of a church, Conyers slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs.

Morse told the Post that she felt the congressman took the "easy way out". According to a former intern for the 27-term congressman who resigned abruptly yesterday, Conyers really knows how to turn a girl's head - and make her run for the nearest exits.
