Nerlens Noel will have surgery on his thumb and miss "several weeks", Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle told the media on Wednesday.

Carlisle made the announcement ahead of the Mavericks game against the Boston Celtics on Monday night. He's appeared in 18 games with six starts this season, averaging 4.0 points and 4.1 rebounds. Since then, he has failed to score in double figures, and since November 7, has failed to log double-digit minutes in any contest. It is not immediately clear what caused the injury, and Noel hasn't played more than six minutes in a game since November 4.

As if his on-court performance wasn't confounding in its own right, Noel had previously sought a monster contract during this past offseason.

Why would Dallas trade him?

Once the sixth-overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Kentucky, Noel was named NBA All-Rookie first team in 2015 and has now seen his minutes dwindle in a less-than-ideal situation with Dallas.
