A Miami-Dade Police officer was rushed to the hospital after he was injured in a shooting that left one person dead in northwest Miami-Dade Wednesday, officials said. The officer has been taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Officers responded to the scene at Northwest 79th Street and 32nd Avenue, at around 1 p.m.

Police say he confronted a shoplifting suspect in the parking lot. A yellow tarp near a auto appeared to be covering a body.

The police officer, who was working an off-duty job at the Miami store, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to CBS in Miami.

Customers told Local 10 News they heard what sounded like gunshots.

A tarp covered a deceased individual in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart, which has largely been cordoned off with crime scene tape.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, per Miami-Dade police policy.

No other information was immediately known.
