One dead in small plane crash near Missouri airport

The deadly accident happened around 3 p.m.at 110 Long Road, not far from the Spirit of St. Louis Airport.

The pilot was the only person on the plane and no one else was injured in the crash. Damage was reportedly done to both a vehicle and a gas pump, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

John Bales, director of the nearby Spirit of St. Louis Airport told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the pilot had been cleared to land, when he reported the plane was losing power and said he was unsure if he would make it to the airport.

A photo moments after a plane crashed in Chesterfield, Missouri on Wednesday. TV footage showed that the small plane crashed near a BP service station and may have clipped a roof over the gas pumps.

KMOX's Brett Blume reports from the scene that at one point, the plane was completely engulfed in flames.
