Ed Sheeran has collected his MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace this afternoon (December 7).

Ed, who has enjoyed phenomenal worldwide success, spoke about his grandfather Bill Sheeran after the ceremony.

His songwriting skills have seen him collaborate with artists like Taylor Swift and he penned the hit Love Yourself for Justin Bieber.

The singer said the Prince of Wales was impressed by the fact that he is playing a gig in NY on Friday, one day after the investiture ceremony.

Double Grammy victor Ed, from Suffolk, remained modest about his achievements saying he didn't have "vast talent" compared to other artists but his "persistence, drive and self belief" had paid off.

At the end, Ed had a brief conversation with Prince Charles and told him that he was travelling to NY tomorrow for another gig.

"I think talent is like 30 percent of it and persistence, drive and self-belief are the other ones, which I guess are all the same thing".

Ed Sheeran has had an incredible 2017, selling millions of copies of his album Divide and headlining Glastonbury.

Ed said that he hadn't been asked by Harry to perform at his wedding in May 2018, but when asked if he would do it, he replied: 'Yeah, why not'.

Sheeran's latest single, Perfect, newly re-worked as a duet with Beyonce, is expected to top the charts this week.

To name a few of his musical achievements, Ed won a Grammy Award previous year and his latest album spent more than 15 weeks at the top of the charts.

Speaking at the palace, Ed explained: 'I think it's persistence.

Sheeran's MBE also recognised his charity work and he has supported a range of organisations including East Anglia's Children's Hospices, acting as an ambassador.

He said he was dashing off to have a celebratory curry with his parents, John and Imogen Sheeran, in central London, before catching his flight to NY.
