It wasn't to be for Sunderland as they missed out on the accolade of the City of Culture.

Tonight, artists and musicians from the city watched on with the media and politicians as the result was announced.

The blow was delivered by arts and culture minister John Glen in Hull, the current City of Culture, shortly before 7.30pm. It has brought so many people and organisations together and this is just the start.

The decision was made after an independent panel of culture experts, chaired by television producer and screenwriter Phil Redmond, visited each of the five candidate cities before recommending Coventry as the victor.

The bid impressed the judges with its focus on youth, diversity and the scale of impact not only in Coventry but across the United Kingdom as a whole.

"Throughout his career Michael has always made time to support the community he grew up in and where his family still lives, and It is great that he has taken up the call for Swansea to win UK City of Culture 2021".
